Kaviya.
Tamil Nadu Government in December, 2019 constituted a high-level committee comprising five ministers and three IAS officers to look into the possibility of splitting the university into two.
Finally, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on September, 2020, passed a bill to bifurcate Anna University into two separate Universities-
i. Anna Technical and Research University
ii. Anna University
Two new legislations viz. Anna University (Amendment) Act 2020 and Anna Technological and Research University Act 1978 will come into force after the State Government issues a notification in that regard.
i. Anna Technical and Research University
This will include the College of Engineering Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, Madras Institute of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning at Chennai.
ii. Anna University
This shall focus only on providing affiliation for engineering colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu.
Reasons for the bifurcation
For creating administrative ease to manage and monitor affiliated colleges because managing the affairs of the engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University was becoming a difficult task for the institution.
This bifurcation is expected to impact the ease of managing affiliated colleges by the University and it is claimed that it is done only for administrative reasons without any political intention.
